"We screwed up. Not a little, a lot. No European country has done something as boneheaded as we have". So said Mr. Ferenc Gyurcsany, the Hungarian prime minister, after it was revealed his government had lied during an election. Rioting has taken place in Budapest. It seems that the newly emerged countries of Eastern Europe are having a difficult time with notion of free and fair elections. Some still resort to lies (although our own New Labour regime would probably have advised Mr. Gyurcsany to "bury bad news") whilst others follow the brown envelope route.
Democracy? It needs an overhaul, that's for sure!
