Nanny Hewitt Niggles Doctors!

Patricia Hewitt, the health secretary, no doubt thinking she was saying something useful, told Pulse magazine that some Muslim women feared raising sensitive issues with their GP in case it got back to their families. She said, "I have had Muslim women give me chapter and verse on very distressing breaches of confidentiality by Muslim GPs. Some women patients feel they cannot trust their own GP, who knows the patient's extended families. If they go and talk to him about a very difficult situation concerning domestic violence or sexual health problems they fear that he will share that with other members of the community. They are very close-knit communities."

She had no basic evidence for these comments, other than anecdotes, and they have, of course, upset Muslim male doctors. I would call it a slur unless she is able to substantiate the remarks. Some wag at the Department of Health suggested that she "did not say that some Muslim GPs are breaching patient confidentiality but that some Muslim women fear their GP will disclose information." That's not quite agreeing with the "chapter and verse" quote, but then I can see how civil servants would wish to diffuse a possible row.

I tend to agree with Shadow Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, who said, "These are very serious accusations. Patricia Hewitt must know that if she has evidence of such breaches of confidentiality she should refer them to the GMC. In any case, I do question whether it is at all helpful to make such generalised statements."

Generalised statements are what we have had from this government for the last ten years. I hope that, if they want to be the next government, the Conservatives desist from spin, subtleties, and half-truths and tell it as it is. That is, keep up in government what they say in opposition.

Renault Risks Lives!

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse in corporate greed land, a boss from Renault UK has just appeared on BBC TV's Watchdog. He was Tim Jackson, Press and Public Relations Director for Renault UK. Exactly what he considers public relations to be defies imagination. Tonight's show was all about the Renault Clio and the bonnet catch fault. True to form, this corporate clown blamed the customer for poor maintenance. No responsibility, other than writing to the existing Renault Clio owners, was taken by Renault UK. Even though it is evident that a bit of design tweaking would alleviate the problem for good!

I would think anyone watching his performance would wonder how he sleeps at night. Possibly valium helps? It is an utter disgrace that Renault is not brought to book for this outrage. And they are conveniently hiding behind VOSA, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, which seems to be as useful as a paper bag in a bath!

Today, New Labour did something good. It introduced regulations to stop another Farepak scandal. Consumer Minister Ian McCartney said "Ring-fencing contributions will ensure that customers' money can only be returned to customers and agents should the company go bust. Families will then be able to put something aside for Christmas in the confidence that their money is safe and there will never be another Farepak." Well done, I say. Credit where credit is due, and the Government has acted well here.

But that still leaves Renault UK and the corporate clown who is playing Russian roulette with drivers' lives. When will he get his knuckles wrapped? And it is utterly galling that Renault have this site on "Safety for All" when the subject of Clio owners' safety seems so low on the priority list. What hypocrites!

Vitamin C or not to C?

A curious case of the Ribena vitamins. Does it contain Vitamin C or not? In New Zealand, it has caused a stir. GlaxoSmithKline, which makes Ribena, pleaded guilty in Auckland District Court to making incorrect health claims. This comes three years after two Auckland teenagers found the drink contained almost no trace of vitamin C. So they couldn't find Vitamin C?

GlaxoSmithKline pleaded guilty and admitted it may have misled consumers in adverts that said blackcurrants in Ribena syrup had four times the vitamin C of oranges. May have misled? Didn't they know? In the UK, the company is stating that Vitamin C in the "UK Original Ready to Drink Ribena (288ml) provides 115% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA)." So it does have Vitamin C, then?

So how come the girls in New Zealand found none? I heard on the radio that Glaxo suggested "the product had degraded on the shelf". So they bought a duff bottle? See how the blame shifts.

I think in the light of all this we should get an independent tester to verify 1. Whether there is Vitamin C in Ribena and 2. if there is, does it degrade on the shelves of shops selling it before the sell-by-date?

Another giant plc trying to blame the poor punter! Who will it be next week?

Diamond is a bank's best friend!

Bob Diamond, head of Barclays investment banking service, whose salary is apparently £250,000 a year has earned £22 million in bonuses and cashed-in share options. Quite a difference. It dwarfed chief executive John Varley's salary and bonus package, which we are not told about by the BBC.

What I'd like to know is this? How much of the Barclays' executives' bonuses was made up from the result of the over-eager sales people at the call centres? Will we ever know? The Barclays site has gone very quiet on the Whistleblower allegations, it seems.

Been Here Before?

Iran, whilst not causing problems over seizing marines and sailors, is encouraging oil importers to pay for their crude in currencies other than the US dollar, such as euros. I've mentioned before that the US administration fell out with Saddam Hussein because he became troublesome over the euro vis-a-vis oil. Are we heading for a similar showdown with Iran?

Probably not is the answer. The US is in a bind over this. They could get Saddam because he was depicted as a monster with WMD. Iran is a different kettle of fish. They are not so easy to portray as the bad boys. The US only just got backing for this struggle in Iraq, and then the UN vote was seen as being something for everyone to believe in - either it was legal or it wasn't - that was the end result.

This new euro-for-oil enterprise will see the Americans watching from the sidelines. The French and Germans will have little or no interest in protecting the dollar. China and India will see the euro as being vaguely similar to the dollar. It may lead to the US negotiating with Iran, but the US is not going to see the dominance of the petro-dollar continue in the 21st Century as much as it did in the last.

And it may usher in a new thinking in the world, where oil is just another fuel alongside others, and our reliance on it is no longer as crucial. But that will mean the USA standing on its own and not relying on the rest of the world spending dollars only!

Lady Godiva Awaits!

I kind of went off the boil over the weekend, what with the clocks going forward. However, yesterday I felt a lot better. Isn't it strange that the weather sometimes fits in with life. Summertime seemed to be here, or at least between Solihull and Coventry. I spent the afternoon in Coventry. They hope to make the city a splendid place. A lot of "regeneration" going on. From what I can gather there's plenty of money to spend as there were loads of people on a Monday out shopping. It's just a pity that the shopping all has to be done in 1960's precincts. Every shop seem to look the same. Concrete and clutter. My thoughts were that if the Luftwaffe had bombed the heart out of the city, wasn't it possible for a new heart to have been put back, rather than some less attractive organ! That's the one thing we seemed to be weak on in the 60's. I could see that Coventry could do with a complete makeover and perhaps it could become a city for cafe culture, great restaurants and theatres. The precincts would change into squares, the arcades into allies. It could!

Shoot First! Ask Questions Later?

I saw on the BNP website that there was a fatal shooting in Utrecht. What I found hard to believe is the claim that there was an apparent cover-up by the authorities. It seems a white Dutchman went to the aid of a pregnant white Dutch woman, who was being molested at knifepoint by a gang of immigrant young people. The chap in question, Rinie Mulder, a 54-year old man with motives which appear none other than genuine took the knife from one of the attackers, but was shot for his troubles by an approaching policeman. He died later in hospital.

What troubles me is that authorities in the Netherlands could be so stupid as to try to cover this all up. It was said that the story has not been reported on Dutch television or in the newspapers. However, the BNP has got hold of it, and I don't know whether the story has been embellished or not to suit their purposes. The story appears on lots of blogs and online tabloids, most denouncing the killing and pointing out the attitude of the Dutch authorities towards this part of Utrecht. What I do know is that parts of society in the Netherlands, as much as in the UK and other Western countries, is so up its own self with political correctness, that innocent people are suffering for the sake of the mindless PC Fascists.
However, when I check to see if Dutch newspapers are reporting the story I find they are. De Telegraaf has this, where a march in memory of Rinie Mulder is reported. 'Zinloos geweld, vijf meter afstand, waarom?' is on a banner. Basically, it translates as "Senseless violence, five metres distance, Why?" and Algemeen Dagblad has reported the story too!
So the the whole thing here, it seems to me, is that when it comes to police "accidents" regarding inflamed situations involving immigrant communities vis-a-vis host communities, it would be much better for the facts to be addressed asap rather that hidden. It is the "going to ground" of the authorities that assists those with a hidden agenda!

Barclays Blusters On!

Christine Farnish, the Public Policy Director of Barclays, would make a good politician! She totally misses the point. The Whistleblower programme was not just about fraudulent accounts, but more about the gross abuse of customers by getting aggressive sales staff to sell stuff customers didn't want or didn't need. She conveniently puts her mind out of the loop on this one.

What she needs to do is scrap the ridiculous sales targets which amount to staff preying on customers. She needs to go back to having advisors in the branches, not commission-led spivs ringing up from an overheated call centre.

So we can rest assured all the calls to Barclays customers will be of an advisory nature, can we? We are waiting Christine! Oh, and you missed out telling us about your overdraft fees. We heard on the programme it costs the bank £1.50 tops! The staff member on the programme giving his opinions seemed to think £40 was a bit stiff. Do you agree?

Bugger Barclays!

King George V was supposed to have uttered the words "Bugger Bogner" on his deathbed. This was in response to a suggestion that he might recover from his illness and visit Bognor Regis. Had he banked with Barclays, he might have said something similar.

Tonight on the BBC in the Whistleblower programme, Barclays Bank was exposed as being a hardbitten salesman's paradise. Staff are given targets to sell spurious "extras" to customers. It's no longer a case of just having your money with them. As the manager of the Guildford branch opined "This is a business and we make money. I'm a shareholder and it's our business to make a success......" No Captain Mainwaring anymore. Just a bunch of cynical spivs!
Now, of course, Barclays are quick to point out that these cases are isolated cases. The response seems weak. Although they have not seen the programme, it beggars belief that they don't know that this mis-selling goes on. It would seem they are as much in denial of the ruthlessness of their sales call centres as the NHS has been over MRSA. The BBC programme gave a fairly accurate view of a culture that is deepseated.
If Barclays wants to give the British public the sense that they actually do want to stamp out this behaviour, why set these ridiculous sales targets in the first place? Mandy Rice Davies should have been asked to comment. The truth is that banks have become financial sales businesses and are pushing more and more onto the customers.
For all those who saw the Whistleblower programme, and indeed, those who didn't, it is now time for Barclays to declare that they will no longer tolerate any employee using such tactics as the programme revealed. The cat is out of the bag. The sales call centre and the branches are now under scrutiny. But if they just hope it will all die down and things will start back up as before, then those banking with Barclays might very well emulate the late king's sentiments!

Misunderstandings

Tony Blair thinks he has obtained a compromise situation over the gay adoption rules. Today the House of Lords will debate the issue. It is hardly likely not to pass, because the LibDems and Labour peers are all being coerced into action. Blair says that the 21 month period is for adjustment. He hopes that the extra time will allow expertise and knowledge to be passed onto the secular sector, rather than being lost altogether. This is a vain hope, I fear.

The secular authorities have little patience with "difficult cases". The Catholic Church may well be able to pass on expertise, but can it pass on faith and love? I suspect not. The whole ethos is what this is about, not just a manual on how to do things. I tend to doubt if the secular authorities will cope. Children will be passed from one case worker to another. They will be sucked into the system.

I hope I'm proved wrong, but at this time my antennae tell me that these children are being sacrificed for political expediency and the rather agggressive agenda of a tiny minority. Time will tell if the secular adoption agencies will be able to place "difficult cases" and that the children do not remain incarcerated in children's homes until they are old enough to fend for themselves.

A New Labour conundrum?

The government's hasty approach to getting the Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations through parliament is just the roughshod way they do things. What I find odd, though, is their thinking. They know the teaching of the Catholic Church. So why set up a cross-party working group to try to find a compromise and a way to allow the Catholic agencies to keep working under the new law. What are they expecting? That the Cardinal will give it a couple of months and then pop round to say "OK, I give up! I was wrong all along!"

They must be more in cloud-cuckoo land than I thought. The Pope has said that social teaching is non-negotiable. What do they not understand about the Catholic Church's position? The government has refused to allow faith-based agencies an opt-out, and has instead given them a 21-month transition period, from April, when the rules are due to come in.

SO! The 21 months will pass and the agencies will close. It's not rocket science!

Beckett's Expediency

Margaret Becket no longer believes in democracy! Or, at least, as far as the Labour Leadership is concerned. She is in favour of expediency. Political expediency. "I hold the view that Gordon is the person who should be the next prime minister," she said. "I think that the good thing would be if he is able to concentrate on what that will mean and what he needs to do to help to take this country forwards to even greater success." So stuff the wishes of the Labour membership.

The real reason is that Labour is up the creek without a financial paddle. Even the cash for honours hasn't done them much good. So let's dispense with the cost and bother of an election.

Apparently the NEC supports the idea of Gordon running around the country on election hustings as the only candidate for leadership. What an idea! This is New Labour's way of smoothing a grumpy-minded man. Personally, I now think Brown would be a disaster. Whereas Blair in a tight spot grits his teeth and says "Well....yeah...look!" I think Brown would just be a scowling menace. Best that they both go and give someone really new a chance. A sort of New Improved New Labour. It works for washing powders!

Ideal Islam?

I've always known that Islam contained a mixed bunch just like Christianity. To cast all Muslims as some form of fifth column element, as the BNP do, is downright absurd and not a little cruel. I'm very pleased to have come across this group.

Progressive British Muslims is very much in line with mainstream thinking. Who could gainsay this statement?

What is our aim:

To advocate:

  • equality in the Muslim community, especially between men and women, but also address equality issues based on sexual preference and disability
  • Muslim integration into mainstream British society whilst maintaining an Islamic identity
  • freedom of speech
  • respect for all faiths
  • human rights and democracy

All power to their elbows!

What Not To Wear!

A Muslim woman decided to venture into a sauna, complete with full hijab and ankle length robes. Nobody seemed bothered that she could overheat in such cirumstances. She then apparently dived into the pool afterwards. Political correctness rendered those in charge at the fitness centre, David Lloyd Leisure, utterly incapable of remonstrating with her.

Thankfully, there are wiser counsels in the land. Taj Hargey, chairman of the Muslim Educational Centre in Oxford, said: “Wearing a veil is nothing to do with Islam, it is a cultural tradition. People should have appropriate swimwear when they come to a leisure centre. It is basic common sense.” He added the incident demonstrated a problem among some Muslim women in Britain. “They think this is their way of making a statement, but this is the worst possible statement. They are shooting themselves in the foot.”

What a wise man! Now all this leads me to think. What if someone had made this up. Decided it would be good in a book or article. You can bet the PC Fascists would be jumping up and down shouting "Racist!" and denouncing what they saw as stereotypical treatment of minorities.

I'm waiting with baited breath for one of them to come forward!

Political Conundrums!

It seems odd to me. Robert Mugabe says he goes to Mass and is a good man. Then he gets his henchman to duff up the opposition leader (complete with half his head shaved!). Tony Blair says he goes to Mass (with Cherie) and is a "well, I'm a fairly straight sort of guy". Then he bombs Iraq, fiddles the honours system, bans foxhunting, gives Scotland a special deal, keeps his backbenchers in the dark about the Attorney-General's legal advice on nuclear weapons, tries to lock people up without a trial, wants ID cards, allows his Chancellor to raid pension funds, and decides on policy in the Number 10 bunker before Parliament knows about it (I mean the Privy Council Office!).

Am I missing something here?

No Info from ACPO!

I've just had another look at the ACPO website! Could be that we need the interview room after all.
ACPO and the Freedom of Information Act 2000
ACPO is a private company and the Office of the Information Commissioner has confirmed that the Freedom of Information Act does not apply to the Association, since Schedule 1 of the Act does not include a definition which covers ACPO.
That is so very convenient when supposedly "robust" data on the reliability of speed cameras is kept under lock and key.

No ID Card? NO PASSPORT!!

James Hall, the official in charge of the supposedly-voluntary ID card scheme, has said the Government would allow people to opt out - but in return they must "forgo the ability" to have a travel document. Nice touch, James!

This is typical of the New Labour PC Fascism that we are now subjected to. Government poodles giving out information which effectively denies what ministers say to Parliament. So, OK, nobody tells porkies to MPs, but the result is just the same.

And our creepy Prime Minister this last week abolished, from his bunker room, the Privy Council Office. Part of British History consigned to his grubby dustbin! Parliament has not been told. Read Peter Oborne's excellent article.

Blair has no respect. He governs with a demoralised bunch of tricksters, who have excuses ready-made for any occasion. They bleat self-righteousness yet are proving to be self-serving.

How long before he goes?

Police chief flouts traffic law!

Tut! Tut! What was he thinking? "Oh, doesn't matter, I can get away with it!" And only days after the law was strengthened. Nobody is above the law. However, doesn't it seem sad that these days there is precious little regard for community responsibility. It is permeating society at all levels.

Last night on ITV1, the Tonight with Trevor McDonald show highlighted how the hand held speed cameras could possibly be faulty. Those who watched will no doubt be amazed at the truculant arrogance of the Association of Chief Police Officers, who are adamant there is nothing inherently wrong with them. Apparently it is OK for this machine to be used up to 3000 feet away and in all weathers. I think Ken Jones, the ACPO President, and his chums should try it out for themselves. Put their time, if not their money, where their mouths are!

Claims have been made by motorists that the LTI20:20 speed gun is seriously flawed. A certain Dr Michael Clark, an expert in laser technology, believes that the device can be prone to error. So come on Ken, let's see all this fantastic data you got proving him wrong.

What is at stake here is that citizens of Britain are not convicted of offences they did not commit just because ACPO does not wish to see a cash cow given the abattoir treatment. So, if you don't have faith in Ken Jones' penalty points bonanza, get in touch with these people - PePiPoo is the place to be.

Is our police service fit for purpose and truthful and honest? We need to know!

Game, Set & Match to Mercer!

Whatever David Cameron thought he was doing yesterday in the name of his party, it has rather backfired on him. A lot of those who would consider themselves Tories are disappointed at best or downright angry at worst. A quick glance at blogs, forums, and chatrooms suggests he will need to say something in order that many people don't think he is just another PC politician.

The Conservative Party needs to keep those who cherish free speech, who hold traditional views, and who are fed up with self-righteous political correctness. If he carries on with a lofty disdain for debate, opinion, and personal expression, then he will never get back those who have left or are feeling left out in the cold.

His opinions on who is a racist and what constitutes a racist may well be valid ones, but it would have been better if he had not jumped in with two flat feet and attacked a man with an impeccable record in supporting his black soldiers' careers in the Army.

This is a nice posting from Danny Finkelstein's blog. Sums it up quite well, I think!

And what is the lesson of the Mercer saga? That one's track record in managing and promoting one's minority employees counts for nothing, compared to making injudicious remarks to the press.

Of course, if the Tories had any senior black members, those members might have been able to offer an opinion on Mr Mercer, one way or the other. They don't, so instead David Cameron must respond to what the media tell him minorities think about Mercer's remarks. That's the real story
here.

Daily Mirror sees its own fault?

Typical that the Daily Mirror (that rag that the prig Piers Morgan used to edit) comes out with a diatribe. It quotes the surly Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram as saying Patrick Mercer's comments were "shocking and completely unacceptable".

Mr Ingram said, "Racist abuse can have no place in any walk of life, and it is appalling for any politician, never mind a senior Tory MP like Patrick Mercer, to suggest that this is just the way it is in the Army. It is an insult to the brave men and women who serve in our armed forces with great distinction." Ingram then thinks it's OK to cover up idleness with the racist tag.

Don't forget folks, New Labour wants to stop foreigners stealing our benefits. Mr. Ingram, why don't you look in the mirror at your own party's racist overtones. Dr. John Reid, a part-time politician like yourself says "foreigners come to this country illegitimately and steal our benefits"!

Nice touch, Mr.Ingram. Come the General Election, we'll know where the real racists are!

Guardian Gets Grumpy - scientifically

Last night Channel 4 broadcast a programme called the Great Global Warming Swindle in which loads of eminent professors and the like spoke out against what they saw as the dodgy science, and more importantly, the political shinanigans of the doom and gloom merchants. Now the Science Editor of the Guardian retorts to all this. Robin McKie is the editor in question. Robin, old dear, you are telling porkies yourself!

McKie suggests that "Given that the world's climatologists have just published a careful, sober report showing global warming is real and worrying, the programme is an astonishing foray into the debate." Which climatologists, Robin? The one's that support your views only, that's what. Those that don't, well some of them appeared on the programme. McKie's statement is pejorative! He then says, "To back his case, director Martin Durkin interviews climate-change deniers including Phillip Stott, Piers Corbyn, Nigel Calder and Nigel Lawson who reveal their antipathy to the idea we are altering Earth's weather systems." Robin, they didn't deny climate change, they denied that industrial carbon dioxide emissions were the prime cause. But don't let that ruin your story!

Lefty fascists like McKie are prepared to distort and lie in order to promote the zealot-like cause they are promoting. I watched the programme. It had some interesting points. Now I don't know if the warming is natural or whatever. The points raised seemed really worth considering, not dismissing out of hand! I do know that the world has warmed up and cooled down over the years many, many times.

Trouble is, the lefty fascists want only their own views to prevail and they will be deceitful in rubbishing truth, conjecture, or just wonderment, if it doesn't suit their cause.

Robin McKie! Your journalism is not worthy of the name!

Dave sees pink on the Moral High Ground!

David Cameron acted swifty and precisely, according to his acolytes. Doing what exactly? Sacking a frontbencher called Patrick Mercer. Apparently for racism. I say apparently, because I doubt Patrick Mercer would stand the test of a normal person's idea of a racist. Dave Cameron, though, has a position to protect and he certainly doesn't want a politically incorrect man raining on the parade of his pink brand of conservatism (or is it pea green or light blue?).

No matter that Colonel Mercer was explaining, in the light of this new trade union set up to protect the sensibilities of soldiers from Commonwealth countries, that some (he didn't disparage anyone personally in racist tones!) ethic minority soldiers were a tad idle. They tended to hide behind the "racist" excuse. Mercer says, "I came across a lot of ethnic minority soldiers who were idle and useless, but who used racism as cover for their misdemeanours. I remember one guy from St Ann's (Nottingham) who was constantly absent and who had a lot of girlfriends. When he came back one day I asked him why, and he would say: 'I was racially abused.' And we'd say: 'No you weren't, you were off with your girlfriends again.' "

What would David Cameron say to an idle black soldier? "Good night, was it? Which girlfriend - oh, shouldn't ask. Don't do it again, though, will you.....pleeeeze?" In Cameron's new world of correct conservatism, any verbal confrontation with a non-white person is "racist", so he sacked Mercer more or less as soon as he heard about this. I think it shows Cameron up far more than it reveals anything about Mercer. Virtually all the black soldiers who served with Mercer have nothing but praise for his leadership.

I have a suggestion for Dave. Why not find a safe seat for one of Colonel Mercer's sergeants or corporals. How about Leroy Hutchinson, a black corporal who served with Mr Mercer for 12 years, who said, "He never tolerated racism and not a single one of his men would consider him to be racist." Leroy, your country, at least, needs you!

So I say quite openly that I think David Cameron is guilty of something a damn sight more sinister. Humbug!

And, of course, it has let the political weasels and stoats out into the open. Labour MP Shahid Malik said this showed the Tories "still are the nasty, racist, sexist, homophobic party they have been for years".

And your party is clean, respectable, and on a par with Caesar's wife? Grow up Malik! You are just a gadfly jumping from one silly remark to the next!

A New House of Horrors!

The House of Commons has just voted for a completely (100%) elected second chamber. They want rid of all the current membership of the House of Lords. So, out with the bishops, out with the law lords, out with the crossbenchers, et al. This will be a dreary affair! No more rigorous scrutiny. No more erudite thinking. Just party placemen and women! Oh what a world!

Apparently we are going to be asked to vote simultaneously in this new election with the great and the good seeking election to the European Parliament. But why would I or anyone else want to vote into a Senate of Sorts people who wouldn't want to stand for election to the House of Commons. Are we to support people who have just filled up the lists. Will it be an open list system? Probably not. So if you don't like the guy at the top of the list for your preferred party, tough cookies!

We will get people knocking on the door seeking our votes to get into this place. What will they know about scrutinising bills? Diddly squat, I'd say. And will they be doing it out of a sense of duty or will they expect a massive salary plus a shagpile carpet in the office? It'll get worse.

How will independently minded people be elected? They won't. My suggestion is to vote for the Monster Raving Loonies on the basis that they will be the only ones capable of spotting the flaws in the stuff coming from the Commons. Don't let us kid ourselves. This isn't democracy as its being peddled. You can bet your bottom dollar/euro/pound that the lists of the main three parties will contain people pliant and willing. That is until they start to flex their muscles and demand a more balanced relationship with the Commons.

As Sir Patrick Cormack said yesterday in the House, this will mean everything is up for grabs, even the Parliament Act. And all this because people talk of patronage. If we hadn't got such a cheesy Prime Minister who basically flouted his own law on election funding (loans instead of gifts, indeed - who's he trying to fool?), we probably wouldn't be here.

In this new House of Horrors what role does the Queen play. "Just wear a nice dress, dear!" is what Jack Straw will say. Her Majesty will sit on an MDF chair, staring at the assembled crowd "What do I call you?". Oh, the Leader of the House forgot to tell her.

It's a sad day if this pantomime ever comes into existence.

The Customer is Always Wrong!

I'm plugging my "support entrepreneurs but be wary of capitalists" line. This lunchtime it was revealed that one of the contenders of the BBC's Dragons Den is getting his Reggae Reggae Sauce to market today. Peter Jones, one of the dragons is behind him. Jones is a great example of an entrepreneur in my view. So is Sir Richard Branson, not afraid to be where it matters, like visiting the site of the recent train crash.

Not so with the capitalists. These are the guys who run the big corporations, take the fat bonuses but hide in the cupboard when the going gets rough. They send out "representatives" to cast blame elsewhere.

In recent months we have seen Cadbury's trying to dodge the salmonella scare, Bernard Matthews suggesting their turkeys didn't come from Hungary and generally being "difficult", Tesco at first casting aspersions about their customers and claiming their fuel was OK, and there have been plenty more. And don't you notice the supine quangos all muttering nice words of reassurance in support. It's all down to the lawyers telling them to keep their mouths shut. Trouble is it always backfires on them. Tesco had to come clean and say they would look at compensation. Bernard Matthews admitted that turkey meat did come from Hungary, and so on.

Last night on BBC's Watchdog programme Renault UK was being taken to task, yet again, for not responding to customers complaints about dodgy bonnet catches. On particular models of the Renault Clio, the bonnet will come undone and fly up hitting the windscreen. Renault seem to take as much interest as an old man in a deckchair on a sunny afternoon!

Presenter Nicky Campbell went round to Renault HQ to seek an interview. They didn't want to know. Now on Renault's website they state that they are "Committed to the very highest standards of corporate governance, Renault is pursuing its drive for transparency to strike a better balance between management, supervisory authorities and shareholders." But what about the customers?

The guys in charge are seen here. Do any of them really care?

Gran's Cakes Go Up In Smoke!

Now I'm not in favour of drug abuse or misuse. I think the penalties for peddling demonstrably mind-damaging and body-ruining substances should be of the harshest. It is a mean spirited and thoroughly unpleasant trade that preys on the vulnerable.

However, there are situations where pain can be relieved through the careful use of drugs, be they concocted in a laboratory or grown naturally as nature intended. A grandmother who campaigned for the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes has just been convicted of possessing and growing the drug. Now some may say never ever, whatever the circumstances. But for pain relief, used under medical supervision, would cannabis be so awful? The grandmother in question, Patricia Tabram, aged 68, denied the charges brought against her. She now faces a possible jail sentence.

For those suffering severe pain, relief from any quarter can be better than the relentless throbbing and aching. I feel the use of cannabis is something the medical profession should look into rather than relying so much on pills that can cause stomach ulcers and long term problems.

But there is another aspect to this story. Following the conviction, a Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Patricia Tabram has consistently flouted the law and Northumbria Police has a duty to act on the information we receive concerning possessing and cultivating drugs in order to enforce this law. We take drug abuse very seriously and are keen to use all tools at our disposal to eliminate drug dealing and use in the community." The casual use of the words "drug abuse" and "drug dealing" seem to suggest that the police put this grandmother up with the hardened criminals. I think the police have a duty to be less perjorative and more authoritative in their statements.

Mr.Nice and Mr.Nasty

- Mr. Pelling on a fishing expedition!

Not long ago the Conservative Party was trying to say it was no longer the nasty party. David Cameron has been at pains to show that he is a nice guy. Mr.Nice of politics. I never thought the Conservative Party was nasty, just that there were some nasty people in it. I quite like Boris Johnson as the clever eccentric MP, I think Anne Widdecombe is an excellent example of the good eccentric too! David Willetts is a good thinker of policy. There are plenty of good Conservative MPs, just as there are Labour and LibDems. However, the latter don't get so many brownie points in my opinion.
But there are some complete morons with political ineptitude. Croydon Central's Conservative MP, Andrew Pelling, is one such moron. In fact, he seems to be able to be quite nasty. He wrote a diatribe to two of his constituents who dared to ask him if he might sign an Early Day Motion (parliamentary petition) objecting to Israel developing closer trade ties with the EU. He ended up by saying, "It will be a pleasure to have you both not voting for me - why don't you go and vote for the BNP?"
When asked why he got so testy, he said, "Often, MPs obfuscate when corresponding with the public. I prefer to be straightforward. If constituents want to dish it out, they ought to be able to take it when it is dished back." How nice! So the grinning man in the picture above is only a publicity seeker. Constituents watch out. He might come after you with that net!
Now why on earth should he take against a couple like this. Is anyone who queries the state of Israel in any way, shape or form, deemed to be BNP material? If so, then a sizeable section of the House of Commons should form a BNP parliamentary party immediately! Might find we get a BNP government overnight. Shudder the thought!
Mr. Pelling! How about laying off the acid drops and sticking to candy floss for a week or two?

Blair gestures his thoughts!

Long ago at university, young Blair thought it fun to make rude gestures and play to the gallery. This photograph, which apparently hasn't been seen in its entirety much, shows us just what he was really doing! The old "head & shoulders" cropped picture of before revealed little.

The thing is, most people today would think the gesture applies to him, for all his political conniving and devious spinning.

Justice and a Justice!

This country has got some odd ways it seems. We have people in high places doing all sorts. Democracy throws up the weak as well as the strong. So we get politicians romping on the floor of their offices with diary secretaries, we get politicians cheating on their wives, their accountants, the taxman, but most of all, the electorate.

Today another miscarriage of justice has been righted. The zealots of the social services in Bromsgrove took against Ian and Angela Gay, suggesting they force fed a three-year-old boy they hoped to adopt. The accusation was they killed him with overdoses of salt. The truth is more accurately that the boy suffered from a rare condition which meant that it was normal. New medical evidence suggested the high salt levels were natural.

So another couple go through hell because these zealots, who seem to have had a class issue as well with the Gays over their "rich lifestyle" made all manner of accusations against them. The police followed through with this in usual style. However, as soon as they were found guilty, all sorts of people smelt a rat's doing. A Central News reporter was uneasy, the doctor on the post mortem was uneasy, nearly all except the CPS. Ah, the CPS, that stalwart band of know-it-alls!

This is how a "spokesman" defended the CPS decision to pursue a retrial in the case. In a statement, it said: "In the light of the new medical evidence, we believe we were right to place it before a jury for the second time. I am satisfied that the CPS fulfilled its duty under the Code for Crown Prosecutors. Our thoughts today are with Christian's family." No mention of the Gays. The CPS couldn't even bring themselves to say sorry!

And when it comes to those judging us? Well, how about a bit of indecent exposure on trains in South London! Yes, judges too, have their highs and lows! British Transport Police said they have charged Lord Justice Sir Stephen Richards, 56, with two counts of exposure following a decision by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The problem of today is that those running the criminal justice system, such as the police, the judges, the crown prosecution lawyers, et al - well, they also have dirty laundry.

It's the devil's own business trying to set an example, isn't it?
