Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, otherwise known as Harry Potter, has decided, along with his cabinet, not to hold a referendum. The reason? He thinks the Dutch people would vote NEE again!
He thinks the new treaty does not propose constitutional changes and therefore does not require a referendum. "This is a normal change of treaty and only needs a normal procedure to approve it," he said.
Funny how Angela Merkel thinks there's only about a 5% difference between the Constitution, which the Dutch rejected and this Treaty. What language does Balkenende speak when chatting to the knowledgeable Angela? Dare I ask?
